How often should you wash a cashmere scarf?
You do not need to wash cashmere after every wear. Air the scarf in a clean, dry place and allow the fibres to recover before folding it away. Wash it when it has visible marks, has absorbed odours, or before longer seasonal storage.
Less frequent, careful washing reduces unnecessary friction and helps preserve the surface of the fabric.
How to hand wash cashmere
- Check the care label. Always follow the instructions provided with your particular scarf.
- Use cool water. Fill a clean basin with cool or cold water and add a small amount of detergent made for wool or cashmere.
- Wash gently. Submerge the scarf and move it slowly through the water. Avoid scrubbing, twisting or rubbing one area against another.
- Rinse carefully. Drain the basin and rinse with water at a similar temperature until the detergent is removed.
- Remove excess water without wringing. Support the scarf with both hands, press gently, then roll it in a clean towel to absorb moisture.
- Reshape and dry flat. Place the scarf on a dry towel away from direct heat and strong sunlight. Smooth it back into shape and leave it flat until completely dry.
Do not hang a wet cashmere scarf. The weight of the water can stretch the fibres and change its shape.
Can cashmere be machine washed?
Only use a washing machine when the care label explicitly allows it. Choose a cold, gentle wool cycle, use a suitable detergent and place the scarf in a protective laundry bag. Hand washing gives you more control and is the safer default for a delicate scarf.
How to deal with pilling
Some surface pilling can occur where soft fibres experience friction. This does not automatically mean the cashmere is poor quality.
Lay the clean, dry scarf on a flat surface. Hold the fabric gently and use a wooden cashmere comb in one direction with light, controlled strokes. Work only on visible surface pills. Do not press hard or repeatedly comb the same area.
Always test a discreet area first, especially on very fine or loosely knitted cashmere.
